Abstract
We have investigated the treatment effects of recombinant human ¥á-interferon-2a (IFN) eyedrops to acute epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (AEK) in rabbits. The both eyes of 17 animals were artifically infected with the sample taken from the conjunctiva of AEK-patient. At 1 day after virus infection, we treated the IFN eyedrops to the right eye and the saline to the left eye of rabbit respectively. No significant ocular complications in the right eye treated with IFN was observed. The improvement of the symptoms of AEK in terms of follicle, discharge, chemosis and congestion were observed in IFN treated eyes compared with those of saline treated eyes. Histopathologicalfy, the conjunctival lesions such as the epithelial keratonization, the hypertrophy and degeneration of subepithelial lymphatic tissue and cell infiltration in IFN treated eyes were milder than those of saline treated eyes. From these results, we suggest that the topical application of IFN might be effective to relief the early treatment and decrease the incidence of ocular complications of the AEK in rabbits.
